Under general supervision, provide research support in the field
and laboratory. Execute research utilizing varied scientific
techniques following specific study protocols.
Collect on-farm samples including but not limited to: feed, blood,
feces and milk. Samples will be tested in laboratory. Prepare and
transport samples. Operate and maintain laboratory equipment in
good working order. Purchasing and stocking laboratory supplies.
Train students in lab safety, research protocols and oversee
student research performance. Supervise use and maintenance of
laboratory equipment (computers, centrifuges, microscopes,
incubators, etc.). Physical Demands:
-Squat, kneel, bend, stoop and stand.
-Lift up to 50 pounds of equipment, supplies and other
-Work safely around dairy cattle on commercial operations.
-Handle, move, and transport animals in ways that meet animal
-Avoid injury to self or animals in lockup facilities, loose in
corrals and in milking parlors.
-Must be able to tolerate strong odors and the sight of exposed
animal tissues and blood products.
- May be required to work in an area where hazardous materials
and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards of the
position are, but are not limited to rabies, salmonella,
cryptosporidia, and campylobacter. Work Environment:
Work occasional overtime including evenings, weekends and holidays
asneeded, usually on short notice to meet operational needs.
Valid CA driver's license required.
This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and
review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations
and University Policy.

and understanding/compliance with animal care protocols and

- Experience with IBM-compatible computers and associated

- Experience pipetting equipment, centrifuges, balances and scales,
microscope, pH/ISE meter, incubators, fume hood, biohazard hoods,
-Interpersonal skills to work with a diverse team from different
backgrounds and with varying skill levels for the purpose of
assisting/teaching /managing laboratory members and student
researchers in research protocols and
laboratory safety as well as coordinating student schedules with
the needs of laboratory projects. Preferred Qualifications:
-Skills to conduct literature and database searches and synthesize
acquired knowledge effectively in writing and apply it to research
-Knowledge of UC policies and procedures, Laboratory Hazard and
Assessment Tool and interpret policies and procedures to ensure
concurrence with department, university, state, federal and outside
-Skills to recognize changes in animal physical appearance or
behavior and to recognize disease conditions in dairy cattle.
-Experience working independently in setting up scales, squeeze
chutes and other animal handling equipment on dairy farms.
-Experience leading students in training sessions ranging from
